5-Boomer Friday

The latest from PE Teacher and author

David Carney

Greetings PE Nation,

I hope you are doing well. The heat index in Florida has been absolutely hurting demolishing my plans for my students. We can't be outside when it hits 104 degrees, which is almost every day. That means a lot of inside instruction for my 3rd grade and kindergarten classes. That means either in the media center or inside their classrooms. It's not a great situation, but we make the best of it for our students. Be sure to check out my new and older podcast episodes, including gamification, kindergarten strategies, and how I teach large out side groups. Remember, this is the format for the newsletter:

1-A tip, game or strategy for teaching

2-A Book I'm reading or a quote I came across

3-A podcast or documentary I think is amazing

4-An awesome thing I've seen or heard or a current obsession of mine

5-A question to ponder or respond to

I hope you enjoy!

Dave

1-Teaching Strategy

Years ago I was at Downtown Disney in Orlando and I saw a DJ pumping up a crowd with pieces short, famous songs. It was genius, and it made my think of how I could incorporate this into my own PE classes. I then started creating music montages on GarageBand, which includes the "Boomers". Here's a video of how I make them. Check it out!

2-Book I'm reading

A long time ago I heard Todd Whitaker speak at a teaching conference. He really inspired me with his simple, yet powerful ideas of how to be your best while educating our youth. I just reread his book, What Great Teachers Do Differently. It's been a nice reminder for the beginning of this school year. Check it out or take a listen!

3-Documentary to check out

Although I grew up a huge hockey fan, since moving to Florida I've mostly followed my local ECHL team. One name from the NHL I knew, however, was goalie Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers. I didn't know about his heart condition that basically ended his career. This documentary covers his NHL highlights, lowlights, and struggles with his health, as well as his attempts to comeback. I really enjoyed this.

4-Awesome thing I've seen or heard

I've seen a lot of bands in concert. My first ever was U2 (I've seen them 4 times). I've seen Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Coldplay, INXS, Duran Duran (twice), Genesis, Radiohead and a lot more (including Vanilla Ice opening for MC Hammer!). Two bands I regret never seeing are Van Halen and Linkin Park. When Chester Bennington took his own life I never thought they would get back together. Now they have a new female singer, a new song, and a new album coming out! Maybe I can check them off my list at some point. Take a listen to this!

5-Questions to ponder

Let's make this super fun! How many concerts have you been to? Who have you seen? Fill out the form below, and I'll share the results on an upcoming podcast.

I hope you've enjoyed this 5-Boomer Friday. Let me know how I can make it more beneficial for you in the future.

5-Boomer Friday The latest from PE Teacher and author David Carney Greetings PE Nation, I hope you are doing well. The Florida weather has given us some consistency problems, especially with kindergarten. We're off the entire week putting up shutters and preparing for the worst (hoping and praying for the best). Growing up in Buffalo, NY, we had serious snow days, but this is crazy! Be sure to check out my new and older podcast episodes, including gamification, large group strategies,...
