5-Boomer Friday

The latest from PE Teacher and author

David Carney

Greetings PE Nation,

I hope you are doing well. We're finally outside a lot more as the heat index is going down (from 105 degrees to 100!). Be sure to check out my new and older podcast episodes, including gamification, kindergarten strategies, and our Around the Horn episodes on various topics.

I hope you enjoy!

Dave

1-Teaching Strategy

I love watching reality competition shows, from "Big Brother", to "Hells Kitchen", to "Survivor" and everything in between. On the "Amazing Race" about 5 years ago they sent the couples to Detroit, where they played "Fowling", a cross between football and bowling. After I saw that, I had to add it to our target game unit. Here's a podcast on it with a free pdf link. It's a great game and the students love it! Check it out!

2-Book I'm reading

I'd seen this book, "Atomic Habits", by James Clear, sitting on my Audible home page for months. I had already listened to (and read) a ton of books on habits and productivity already, so I was reluctant to try another one. But, I'm so glad I did. He breaks down how to form good habits, break bad ones and keep your life on track in an easy to read or listen to format. It's perfect for educators to stay focused on what's important and what can be eliminated from your busy schedule. Check it out or take a listen!

3-Documentary to check out

Working at the local arena, I see a lot of hockey, concerts, comedians and other performers. My first ever event was Cirque Du Soleil, five years ago. They returned recently, almost to the day I started working there with a new performance. I brought my family to the first one on Thursday, then worked Friday, two on Saturday, and the final one on Sunday. Needless to say, I got to know the skits and acts before they were on stage! On the final show, I was positioned upstairs and behind the stage, where the performers took breaks and had a buffet to enjoy. They were kind, but professional and I didn't want to bother them. One artist from Australia, however, was injured and spoke to me at length about her career and their journey as a traveling act. This documentary is about how Covid shut down the Las Vegas act and how they made a comeback. It's behind the scenes and very inspirational. Check it out!

4-Awesome thing I've seen or heard

Who doesn't love putt-putt, or as some say, miniature golf? I know I do, and we take our kids every so often. Now there's a "Cornhole Golf" course, designed like putt-putt, with obstacles and challenges like the original. plus, there's regular mini-golf and soccer golf as well. Can you make one for your students? I'm sure you can, and my wheels are spinning!

5-Questions to ponder

I'm still looking for more guests to be on my show. I will start reaching out to you soon if you'd like to share your games, tips and best practices. Don't be shy, sign up!

I hope you've enjoyed this 5-Boomer Friday. Let me know how I can make it more beneficial for you in the future.

5-Boomer Friday The latest from PE Teacher and author David Carney Greetings PE Nation, I hope you are doing well. The Florida weather has given us some consistency problems, especially with kindergarten. We're off the entire week putting up shutters and preparing for the worst (hoping and praying for the best). Growing up in Buffalo, NY, we had serious snow days, but this is crazy! Be sure to check out my new and older podcast episodes, including gamification, large group strategies,...

5-Boomer Friday!!!

5-Boomer Friday The latest from PE Teacher and author David Carney Greetings PE Nation, I hope you are doing well. The heat index in Florida has been absolutely hurting demolishing my plans for my students. We can't be outside when it hits 104 degrees, which is almost every day. That means a lot of inside instruction for my 3rd grade and kindergarten classes. That means either in the media center or inside their classrooms. It's not a great situation, but we make the best of it for our...
